  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 8 slices cheese
  • 450 g ground beef
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 4 tbsp mayonnaise
  • 2 medium onions
  • 8 slices rye bread
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

Directions

Step 1
In a large skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook until caramelized, about 15 minutes. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
Step 2
In a bowl, mix the ground beef with salt and black pepper. Form into 4 equal-sized patties.
Step 3
In the same skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side until fully cooked. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
Step 4
In a small bowl, mix the mayonnaise, ketchup, and Worcestershire sauce to make the special sauce.
Step 5
Spread some of the special sauce on one side of each slice of rye bread.
Step 6
To assemble the patty melts, place a slice of cheese on each slice of bread with sauce. Add a beef patty, caramelized onions, and another slice of cheese. Top with another slice of bread, sauce side down.
Step 7
In the same skillet, melt the remaining butter over medium heat. Cook the sandwiches for about 3-4 minutes on each side until the bread is toasted and the cheese is melted.
