Step 1
Place the ham bone in a large pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer and cook for 1 hour.

Remove the ham bone and set aside to cool. Add the carrots, celery, potatoes, onion, and garlic to the pot and simmer for 20 minutes.

Add the diced tomatoes, green beans, salt, pepper, and bay leaf to the pot and continue to cook for another 20 minutes.

Once the ham bone is cool enough to handle, remove any meat from the bone, chop it up, and return it to the pot.
