Classic British Scones

Ingredients

  • 250 g all-purpose flour
  • 15 g baking powder
  • 60 g butter
  • 1 egg
  • 120 ml milk
  • 1 g salt
  • 50 g sugar

Directions

Step 1
Preheat your oven to 220°C (425°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Step 2
In a large bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
Step 3
Add the cubed butter to the flour mixture and rub it in with your fingertips until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.
Step 4
Stir in the sugar.
Step 5
Make a well in the center of the mixture and pour in the milk. Mix gently until you have a soft dough.
Step 6
Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead lightly until smooth.
Step 7
Roll out the dough to a thickness of about 2cm. Use a round cutter to stamp out scones and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
Step 8
Brush the tops of the scones with the beaten egg.
Step 9
Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes or until the scones are well risen and golden.
Step 10
Remove from the oven and transfer to a wire rack to cool slightly before serving.
