Ingredients

  • 120 g all-purpose flour
  • 10 g baking powder
  • 240 g cornmeal
  • 1 egg
  • 240 ml milk
  • 500 ml oil
  • 0.5 onion
  • 5 g salt
  • 15 g sugar

Directions

Step 1
In a large bowl, combine cornmeal, flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.
Step 2
Stir in the finely chopped onion.
Step 3
Add the beaten egg and milk to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
Step 4
Heat the oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 175°C (350°F).
Step 5
Drop spoonfuls of batter into the hot oil and fry until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.
Step 6
Remove hush puppies from oil and drain on paper towels. Serve hot.
