Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) and grease a loaf tin.

Place the chopped dates in a bowl, pour over the boiling water, and stir in the baking soda. Let it sit for 10 minutes.

In a separate bowl, cream together the butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy.

Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition, then stir in the vanilla extract.

Gradually add the self-raising flour to the butter mixture, mixing until just combined.

Fold in the date mixture and chopped walnuts until evenly distributed.

Pour the batter into the prepared loaf tin and smooth the top.
