Ingredients

8 Servings
  • 7 g active dry yeast
  • 500 g bread flour
  • 20 ml malt syrup or honey
  • 10 g salt
  • 15 g sugar
  • 15 ml vegetable oil
  • 250 ml warm water
  • 2000 ml water for boiling

Directions

Step 1
In a large bowl, combine warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the water and let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
Step 2
Add the flour, salt, and vegetable oil to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms.
Step 3
Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Step 4
Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours or until doubled in size.
Step 5
Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball, then poke a hole in the center and stretch to form a bagel shape.
Step 6
Preheat your oven to 220°C (425°F).
Step 7
Bring a large pot of water to a boil and add the malt syrup or honey.
Step 8
Boil the bagels, 2-3 at a time, for 1 minute on each side, then remove with a slotted spoon and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Step 9
Bake the bagels in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
Step 10
Allow the bagels to cool on a wire rack before serving.
