Ingredients

  • 50 g butter
  • 200 g cheese
  • 240 g cornmeal
  • 5 g salt
  • 500 ml water

Directions

Step 1
In a large bowl, mix the cornmeal and salt.

Gradually add the water, stirring constantly until a dough forms.

Knead the dough until it is smooth and let it rest for 5 minutes.

Divide the dough into 8 equal portions and shape each portion into a ball.

Flatten each ball into a disc, about 1 cm thick.

Place some cheese in the center of each disc and fold the edges over to enclose the cheese, then flatten again slightly.

Heat the butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
Step 8
Cook the arepas in the skillet for about 5-7 minutes on each side, until golden brown and crispy.
Step 9
Serve the arepas warm, with your choice of toppings.
