Classic Sopapillas

Delicious, light and puffy fried pastries perfect for dessert or a sweet snack. Best served warm with honey or cinnamon sugar.

Ingredients

  • 480 g all-purpose flour
  • 10 g baking powder
  • 5 g salt
  • 60 g shortening
  • 500 ml vegetable oil
  • 240 ml water

Directions

Step 1
In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt.
Step 2
Cut in the shortening until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Step 3
Stir in the warm water to form a dough.
Step 4
Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface until smooth, about 5 minutes.
Step 5
Cover and let the dough rest for 20 minutes.
Step 6
Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/8 inch thick.
Step 7
Cut into 3-inch squares or triangles.
Step 8
Heat oil in a deep-fryer or large saucepan to 375°F (190°C).
Step 9
Fry the dough pieces until they puff up and turn golden brown, about 1-2 minutes per side.
Step 10
Drain on paper towels and serve warm with honey or cinnamon sugar.
