Step 1
Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F).

Peel and thinly slice the potatoes using a mandoline or sharp knife.

Melt the butter in a small saucepan over low heat.

Grease a baking dish with a portion of the melted butter.

Layer one-third of the potato slices in the bottom of the baking dish, overlapping slightly.

Sprinkle with one-third of the grated Gruyère cheese, salt, and black pepper.

Drizzle a portion of the melted butter over the layer.

Repeat the layers two more times, finishing with a layer of cheese on top.

Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes.

Remove the foil and bake for an additional 20-25 minutes, until the top is golden brown and crispy.
