Delicious deep-fried rice balls inspired by the flavors of a California roll, perfect as an appetizer or snack.
Directions
Step 1
Rinse the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear.
Step 2
Combine the rice and water in a rice cooker and cook according to the manufacturer's instructions. Once cooked, let it cool slightly.
Step 3
In a small bowl, mix rice vinegar, sugar, and salt until dissolved. Gently fold this mixture into the cooked rice.
Step 4
Dice the imitation crab meat, avocado, and cucumber into small pieces. Mix with mayonnaise and soy sauce.
Step 5
Wet your hands and take a small amount of rice, flatten it, and place a spoonful of the crab mixture in the center. Cover with more rice and shape into a ball. Repeat with the remaining rice and filling.
Step 6
Set up a breading station with flour, beaten egg, and panko breadcrumbs in separate bowls.
Step 7
Coat each rice ball in flour, then dip in beaten egg, and roll in panko breadcrumbs until fully coated.
Step 8
Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 180°C (350°F). Fry the rice balls in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes.
Step 9
Remove the rice balls with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Serve warm with soy sauce for dipping.
