Directions
Step 1
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x5 inch loaf pan.

In a small bowl, combine chopped dates and baking soda. Pour boiling water over the dates and let it stand until cool.

In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

Add the egg and vanilla extract to the butter mixture and beat well.

In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt.

Add the flour mixture and the cooled date mixture alternately to the butter mixture, stirring just until combined.

Fold in the chopped walnuts.

Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan.

Bake for 60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Let the bread cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
