Step 1
In a large pot, combine the shredded red cabbage, chopped apples, and chopped onion.

Stir in the sugar, apple cider vinegar, water, salt, black pepper, and ground cloves.
Step 3
Add the bay leaf to the mixture.
Step 4
Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally.
Step 5
Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and simmer for about 1 to 1.5 hours, or until the cabbage is tender.
Step 6
Remove the bay leaf before serving.
