In a large bowl, mix together the peanut butter, softened butter, and vanilla extract until well combined.

Gradually add the powdered sugar to the peanut butter mixture, beating until the mixture is smooth and holds together well.

Shape the mixture into 1-inch balls and place them on a baking sheet lined with wax paper. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.

In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the chocolate chips and shortening together in 30-second intervals, stirring between each interval until smooth.

Using a toothpick, dip each peanut butter ball into the melted chocolate, leaving a small portion of the peanut butter visible at the top.
