In a large pot, melt the butter with the olive oil over medium heat.

Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are caramelized, about 25 minutes.

Sprinkle the sugar over the onions and continue to cook for another 5 minutes.

Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute.

Pour in the beef broth and white wine. Add the bay leaf and thyme.

Season with salt and black pepper to taste. Simmer the soup for 30 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).

Place the baguette slices on a baking sheet and toast them in the oven until golden brown.
