Authentic Horchata

A refreshing and creamy Mexican beverage made from rice, milk, vanilla, and cinnamon. Perfect for cooling down on a hot day.

Ingredients

  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 cups milk
  • 0.5 cups sugar
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 4 cups water
  • 1.5 cups white rice

Directions

Step 1
Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs clear.
Step 2
In a blender, combine the rinsed rice, 2 cups of water, and cinnamon sticks. Blend until the rice and cinnamon sticks are roughly ground.
Step 3
Pour the mixture into a large bowl and add the remaining 2 cups of water. Stir and let it sit at room temperature for at least 3 hours, or overnight for better flavor.
Step 4
Strain the rice mixture through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a pitcher. Discard the solids.
Step 5
Stir in the milk, vanilla extract, and sugar until the sugar is completely dissolved.
Step 6
Chill the horchata in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours before serving. Stir well before pouring into glasses over ice.
