Bobotie is a South African dish consisting of spiced minced meat baked with an egg-based topping. It's a flavorful and aromatic dish perfect for family dinners.

Ingredients

  • 50 g almonds
  • 2 tbsp apricot jam
  • 3 bay leaves
  • 2 slices bread
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp curry powder
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 500 g ground beef
  • 250 ml milk
  • 1 onion
  • 0.5 tsp pepper
  • 50 g raisins
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp turmeric
  • 1 tbsp vinegar

Directions

Step 1
Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
Step 2
Soak the bread in half of the milk, then squeeze out the milk and crumble the bread.
Step 3
In a large pan, sauté the chopped onions and minced garlic until soft.
Step 4
Add the ground beef and cook until browned.
Step 5
Mix in the curry powder, turmeric, vinegar, brown sugar, apricot jam, raisins, sliced almonds, crumbled bread, salt, and pepper. Stir well.
Step 6
Transfer the mixture to a greased baking dish.
Step 7
Beat the eggs with the remaining milk and pour over the meat mixture.
Step 8
Place the bay leaves on top.
Step 9
Bake in the preheated oven for about 45 minutes, or until the top is set and golden brown.
Step 10
Serve hot with yellow rice and chutney.
