Step 1
In a medium saucepan, whisk together sugar, flour, and salt.

Gradually stir in milk and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens and comes to a boil.

Remove from heat. Gradually stir about half of the hot mixture into the beaten egg yolks, then return to the saucepan and cook for 2 more minutes, stirring constantly.

Remove from heat and stir in butter and vanilla extract until the butter is melted and the mixture is smooth.
Step 5
Layer half of the vanilla wafers in the bottom of a 2-quart baking dish. Top with half of the banana slices, then half of the custard. Repeat layers.

Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving to allow the flavors to meld.
