  • 300 g all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 tsp almond extract
  • 225 g butter
  • 1 egg
  • 0.5 tsp peppermint extract
  • 1 tbsp red food coloring
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 200 g sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Directions

Step 1
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
Step 2
In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in the egg, almond extract, and vanilla extract.
Step 3
Gradually blend in the flour and salt until well mixed.
Step 4
Divide the dough into two portions. Color one portion with the red food coloring and peppermint extract.
Step 5
Roll a 4-inch rope of each color. Place the ropes side by side and twist them together, then curve the top to form the handle of the candy cane.
Step 6
Place cookies 2 inches apart on ungreased baking sheets.
Step 7
Bake for 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven, or until set and lightly browned. Remove from baking sheets to cool on wire racks.
