This traditional Polish Egg Bread, also known as Chałka, is a slightly sweet, soft, and fluffy bread that is perfect for breakfast or any meal. It's braided and baked to golden perfection.

Ingredients

  • 50 g butter
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 3 eggs
  • 500 g flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 100 g sugar
  • 200 ml warm milk
  • 1 tbsp water
  • 10 g yeast

Directions

Step 1
In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt.
Step 2
Dissolve the yeast in warm milk and let it sit for 5 minutes.
Step 3
Add the yeast mixture, butter, and eggs to the flour mixture and knead until a smooth dough forms.
Step 4
Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.

Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).

Divide the dough into three equal parts and braid them together.
Step 7
Place the braid on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Step 8
Beat the egg yolk with water and brush over the braid.
Step 9
Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
Step 10
Let the bread cool on a wire rack before slicing and serving.
