  • 2 bay leaves
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper
  • 2 carrots
  • 2 celery stalks
  • 1500 ml chicken broth
  • 450 g dried navy beans
  • 3 garlic cloves
  • 1 ham hock
  • 1 onion
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 500 ml water

Directions

Step 1
Rinse and sort the beans to remove any debris.
Step 2
In a large pot, combine beans, ham hock, carrots, celery, onion, garlic, bay leaves, chicken broth, and water.
Step 3
Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 2 hours or until beans are tender.
Step 4
Remove the ham hock from the pot and let cool slightly.
Step 5
Remove and discard the bay leaves.
Step 6
Shred the meat from the ham hock and return it to the pot.
Step 7
Season the soup with salt and pepper to taste.
Step 8
Simmer for an additional 10 minutes to let the flavors meld.
