Ingredients

  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 2 cups cheddar cheese
  • 450 g ham
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 onion
  • 6 potatoes
  • 1 tsp salt

Directions

Step 1
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Step 2
In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
Step 3
Add the chopped onion and cook until softened.
Step 4
Stir in the flour, salt, and pepper until well blended.
Step 5
Gradually add milk, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens and comes to a boil.

Remove from heat and stir in 1.5 cups of shredded cheddar cheese until melted and smooth.
Step 7
In a greased baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes, half of the cubed ham, and half of the cheese sauce. Repeat the layers with the remaining potatoes, ham, and cheese sauce.
Step 8
Sprinkle the remaining 0.5 cup of shredded cheddar cheese on top.
Step 9
Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 1 hour.
Step 10
Remove the foil and bake for an additional 30 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown.
Step 11
Let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
