A traditional King Cake made with buttermilk dough and filled with a rich cream cheese mixture. Perfect for celebrating Mardi Gras or any festive occasion.
Directions
Step 1
In a small bowl, warm the buttermilk to about 110°F (43°C). Add the yeast and a pinch of the sugar. Let it sit until foamy, about 5 minutes.
Step 2
In a large mixing bowl, combine the remaining sugar, melted butter, eggs, flour, and salt. Add the yeast mixture and knead until a smooth dough forms.
Step 3
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1-2 hours.
Step 4
While the dough is rising, prepare the cream cheese filling. In a medium bowl, beat the cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth.
Step 5
Once the dough has risen, roll it out into a large rectangle on a floured surface. Spread the cream cheese mixture evenly over the dough, then sprinkle with ground cinnamon.
Step 6
Roll the dough up tightly from one long edge to the other. Form the roll into a ring, pinching the edges to seal. Place the ring on a greased baking sheet.
Step 7
Cover the ring with a clean cloth and let it rise again for about 30-45 minutes.
Step 8
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the King Cake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.
Step 9
Allow the cake to cool slightly, then decorate with colored sugar.
