Ingredients

  • 400 grams all-purpose flour
  • 15 grams baking powder
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 120 ml milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 150 grams sugar
  • 30 grams unsalted butter
  • 5 ml vanilla extract
  • 500 ml vegetable oil

Directions

Step 1
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg.
Step 2
In another bowl, combine the sugar, melted butter, milk, beaten egg, and vanilla extract. Mix until well blended.
Step 3
Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring until a soft dough forms.
Step 4
Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead gently until smooth. Roll out the dough to about 1/2-inch thickness.
Step 5
Use a doughnut cutter to cut out doughnuts and holes. Re-roll and cut any remaining dough.
Step 6
Heat the vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 375°F (190°C).
Step 7
Fry the doughnuts and holes in batches, turning once, until golden brown. This should take about 1-2 minutes per side.

Remove the doughnuts with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.

Allow the doughnuts to cool slightly before adding your favorite toppings or glaze.
