Traditional Russian Pirozhki are delicious baked or fried buns filled with a variety of fillings, such as meat, potatoes, or cabbage. Perfect for a snack or a hearty meal, these pirozhki are a staple in Russian cuisine.
Directions
Step 1
In a bowl, mix the milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
Step 2
Add the melted butter, egg, and salt to the yeast mixture. Gradually add the flour and knead the dough until it becomes smooth and elastic. Cover and let it rise for about 1 hour.
Step 3
While the dough is rising, prepare the fillings. For the meat filling, cook the ground beef and onion in a pan until fully cooked. For the potato filling, boil and mash the potatoes. For the cabbage filling, sauté the cabbage in a little oil until soft.
Step 4
Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) if baking. If frying, heat the oil in a deep pan.
Step 5
Once the dough has risen, divide it into equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball and flatten it. Place a spoonful of your desired filling in the center and fold the dough over the filling, pinching the edges to seal.
Step 6
Place the pirozhki on a baking sheet if baking, or carefully place them in the hot oil if frying.
Step 7
Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown, or fry until golden and crispy. Remove and let cool slightly before serving.
