Baumkuchen, also known as Tree Cake, is a German layered cake that resembles a tree's growth rings. This unique cake is made by brushing thin layers of batter onto a rotating spit and baking each layer until golden brown. The result is a deliciously moist and visually stunning cake perfect for special occasions.
Directions
Step 1
Preheat your oven to 200°C (392°F). Grease and line a 20cm round cake tin.
Step 2
Cream the unsalted butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
Step 3
Add the vanilla extract and mix well.
Step 4
Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
Step 5
In a separate bowl, sift together the cake flour, cornstarch, and baking powder.
Step 6
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk, and mix until just combined.
Step 7
Pour a thin layer of batter into the prepared cake tin and spread evenly.
Step 8
Bake for about 3-4 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from the oven and add another thin layer of batter.
Step 9
Repeat the process, baking each layer until golden brown, until all the batter is used.
Step 10
Once all layers are baked, let the cake cool completely in the tin.
Step 11
Remove the cooled cake from the tin and coat it with the melted dark chocolate.
Step 12
Allow the chocolate to set before slicing and serving.
