Step 1
Place the ham bone in a large pot and add the water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 1 hour.

Remove the ham bone from the pot and set it aside to cool. Strain the broth to remove any small bone fragments.

Add the carrots, celery, potatoes, onion, and garlic to the strained broth. Simmer for 20-25 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender.

While the vegetables are cooking, remove any remaining meat from the ham bone and chop it into small pieces.

Return the chopped ham to the pot. Add the salt, black pepper, and bay leaf. Simmer for another 10 minutes.
