Directions
Step 1
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Step 2
In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until translucent.
Step 3
Stir in the flour and cook for another minute to create a roux.
Step 4
Gradually whisk in the milk, ensuring there are no lumps. Continue to cook, whisking constantly, until the mixture thickens.
Step 5
Remove from heat and stir in the shredded cheddar cheese until melted and smooth. Add the garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
Step 6
In a greased 9x13 inch baking dish, layer half of the potato slices. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes.
Step 7
Add the remaining potato slices on top and pour the rest of the cheese sauce over them.
Step 8
Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes.
Step 9
Remove the foil and bake for an additional 30 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown.
Step 10
Let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
