Ingredients

  • 1 bay leaf
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper
  • 2 carrots
  • 2 celery stalks
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 ham bone
  • 1 onion
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 450 g split peas
  • 2000 ml water

Directions

Step 1
Rinse the split peas under cold water and set aside.
Step 2
In a large pot, combine the ham bone, onion, carrots, celery, garlic, water, and bay leaf.
Step 3
Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 1.5 hours, stirring occasionally.
Step 4
Remove the ham bone and set it aside to cool. Add the split peas to the pot and continue to simmer for another 1.5 hours, or until the peas are tender.
Step 5
Once the ham bone is cool enough to handle, remove any meat and add it back to the soup.
Step 6
Season with salt and black pepper. Stir well and serve hot.
