Struffoli is a delightful Italian dessert, traditionally served around Christmas. These small, deep-fried dough balls are sweetened with honey and typically garnished with colorful sprinkles and candied fruit. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, Struffoli makes for a festive and delicious treat.

Ingredients

  • 400 g all-purpose flour
  • 50 g butter
  • 100 g candied fruit
  • 4 eggs
  • 50 g granulated sugar
  • 200 g honey
  • 1 lemon zest
  • 50 g multi-colored sprinkles
  • 1 orange zest
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 500 ml vegetable oil

Directions

Step 1
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt.
Step 2
Make a well in the center and add the eggs, melted butter, lemon zest, and orange zest.
Step 3
Mix until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface until smooth.
Step 4
Divide the dough into small portions and roll each portion into thin ropes about 1 cm in diameter.
Step 5
Cut the ropes into small pieces, roughly the size of a hazelnut.
Step 6
Heat the vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 175°C.
Step 7
Fry the dough pieces in batches until golden brown and crispy. Drain on paper towels.
Step 8
In a large pan, heat the honey until it becomes liquid. Add the fried dough pieces and stir to coat them evenly with honey.
Step 9
Transfer the honey-coated Struffoli to a serving dish and shape into a mound or ring.
Step 10
Decorate with multi-colored sprinkles and candied fruit. Allow to cool before serving.
