Ingredients

  • 200 g basmati rice
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2 cloves
  • 5 ml cumin seeds
  • 15 g fresh coriander
  • 5 ml salt
  • 15 ml vegetable oil
  • 500 ml water

Directions

Step 1
Rinse the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear.
Step 2
In a medium pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat.
Step 3
Add the cumin seeds, bay leaf, cloves, and cinnamon stick. Sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant.
Step 4
Add the rinsed rice to the pot and stir to coat the rice with the oil and spices.
Step 5
Pour in the water and add salt. Stir well and bring to a boil.
Step 6
Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot with a lid, and simmer for 15-20 minutes until the rice is cooked and the water is absorbed.
Step 7
Remove from heat and let it sit, covered, for 5 minutes.
Step 8
Fluff the rice with a fork and garnish with chopped fresh coriander before serving.
