Directions
Step 1
Heat the olive oil and butter in a large pot over medium heat.
Step 2
Add the finely chopped onion, carrot, and celery. Cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
Step 3
Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute.
Step 4
Add the ground beef and ground pork. Cook until browned, breaking up the meat with a spoon.
Step 5
Stir in the tomato paste and cook for another 2 minutes.
Step 6
Pour in the red wine and cook until it has mostly evaporated, about 5 minutes.
Step 7
Stir in the whole milk and let it simmer until it has mostly evaporated, about 5 minutes.
Step 8
Add the canned tomatoes, bay leaf, salt, and black pepper. Stir to combine.
Step 9
Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer, uncovered, for at least 2 hours, stirring occasionally.
Step 10
Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper if needed. Remove the bay leaf before serving.
