A savory and hearty French Canadian meat pie, perfect for festive occasions or a comforting family meal. This tourtière combines ground pork, beef, and subtle spices to create a rich and flavorful dish encased in a flaky pie crust.

Ingredients

  • 0.5 tsp allspice
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper
  • 0.5 tsp cinnamon
  • 0.5 tsp cloves
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 450 g ground beef
  • 450 g ground pork
  • 1 onion
  • 2 pie crust
  • 1 potato
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 250 ml water

Directions

Step 1
In a large skillet, cook the ground pork and beef over medium heat until no longer pink, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks.
Step 2
Add the onion and garlic to the skillet and cook until the onion is tender, about 5 minutes.
Step 3
Stir in the grated potato, water, cinnamon, cloves, allspice, salt, and black pepper. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for about 35 minutes, until the mixture is thickened and the flavors are well combined.
Step 4
Preheat your oven to 190°C (375°F).
Step 5
Fit one pie crust into a 9-inch pie plate. Fill with the meat mixture.
Step 6
Cover with the second pie crust, crimping the edges to seal. Cut a few slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape.
Step 7
Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, until the crust is golden brown.
Step 8
Let the tourtière cool slightly before slicing and serving.
