Ingredients

6 Servings
  • 1 tbsp active dry yeast
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 tbsp water

Directions

Step 1
In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 10 minutes until frothy.
Step 2
Add salt, olive oil, and 2 cups of flour to the yeast mixture. Stir to combine.
Step 3
Gradually add the remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, until a soft dough forms.
Step 4
Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 6-8 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Step 5
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
Step 6
Punch down the dough and divide it into 6 equal portions. Shape each portion into a ball.
Step 7
Place the dough balls on a greased baking sheet. Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes.
Step 8
Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
Step 9
In a small bowl, beat the egg with 1 tablespoon of water. Brush the mixture over the tops of the dough balls.
Step 10
Bake the bread bowls for about 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
Step 11
Allow the bread bowls to cool slightly, then cut off the top and scoop out the center to create a bowl.
Step 12
Fill with your favorite soup, stew, or creamy pasta and serve.
