  • 0.5 tsp chili powder
  • 2 tbsp cilantro
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 1 tbsp ginger
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 1 onion
  • 200 g red lentils
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tomato
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 750 ml water

Directions

Step 1
Rinse the red lentils thoroughly under cold water until the water runs clear.
Step 2
In a large pot, add the rinsed lentils and water. Bring to a boil over high heat.
Step 3
Reduce the heat to low, cover, and let it simmer for about 20 minutes until the lentils are tender.
Step 4
While the lentils are cooking, heat the oil in a pan over medium heat.
Step 5
Add the cumin seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds.

Add the chopped onion and sauté until golden brown.

Stir in the minced garlic and ginger, and cook for another minute.

Add the chopped tomato, turmeric powder, coriander powder, chili powder, and salt. Cook until the tomatoes are soft and the oil starts to separate from the mixture.

Pour this mixture into the cooked lentils and mix well.

Simmer for another 5-10 minutes to let the flavors meld together.

Garnish with chopped cilantro before serving.
