Traditional Mushy Peas

A classic British side dish made from peas cooked until soft, creating a creamy, delicious accompaniment to fish and chips or other main dishes.

Ingredients

  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 250 g dried marrowfat peas
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 l water

Directions

Step 1
In a large bowl, place the dried marrowfat peas and add the baking soda. Cover with water and soak overnight, or for at least 12 hours.
Step 2
Drain and rinse the soaked peas thoroughly.
Step 3
In a large saucepan, add the soaked peas and 1 liter of water. Bring to a boil over high heat.
Step 4
Reduce the heat to low and let the peas simmer for about 1.5 to 2 hours, or until the peas are very soft and mushy. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
Step 5
Once the peas are cooked, add salt and butter, and stir well.
Step 6
Serve hot as a side dish.
