Babka is a sweet, braided bread that originated in Eastern Europe. It is typically filled with chocolate or cinnamon and makes a perfect breakfast or dessert treat.
Directions
Step 1
Warm the milk to about 40°C and dissolve the yeast in it. Let it sit for about 10 minutes until frothy.
Step 2
In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, and salt. Add the yeast mixture, eggs, and vanilla extract. Mix until a dough forms.
Step 3
Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
Step 4
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a cloth, and let it rise for about 1.5 hours or until it has doubled in size.
Step 5
Melt the chocolate and butter together. Mix in the cocoa powder and powdered sugar to make the filling.
Step 6
Once the dough has risen, roll it out into a large rectangle. Spread the chocolate filling evenly over the dough.
Step 7
Roll the dough tightly into a log. Cut the log lengthwise and twist the two halves together to form a braid.
Step 8
Place the braided dough into a greased loaf pan. Cover and let it rise again for about 30 minutes.
Step 9
Preheat the oven to 180°C. Bake the babka for about 30-35 minutes or until golden brown.
Step 10
Let the babka cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
