A traditional German-American breakfast treat combining pork, beef, and oats, perfect for a hearty start to your day.
Directions
Step 1
In a large pot, combine the ground pork, ground beef, steel-cut oats, water, and finely chopped onion.
Step 2
Add the bay leaves, salt, black pepper, ground sage, ground marjoram, and ground thyme to the pot.
Step 3
Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce the heat to low and simmer for approximately 2 hours, stirring occasionally.
Step 4
Once the mixture has thickened to a porridge-like consistency, remove it from the heat and discard the bay leaves.
Step 5
Pour the mixture into a greased loaf pan, smoothing the top with a spatula.
Step 6
Allow the goetta to cool to room temperature, then cover and refrigerate overnight to set.
Step 7
To serve, slice the goetta into 1/2-inch thick slices and fry in a skillet over medium heat until golden brown on both sides.
