Traditional Mincemeat

A rich and flavorful mixture perfect for filling pies and tarts, made with a combination of dried fruits, spices, and a hint of brandy.

Ingredients

  • 3 apples
  • 200 ml brandy
  • 350 g brown sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 300 g currants
  • 150 g mixed peel
  • 2 tsp mixed spice
  • 0.5 tsp nutmeg
  • 500 g raisins
  • 250 g suet
  • 300 g sultanas
  • 2 zest and juice of lemons
  • 2 zest and juice of oranges

Directions

Step 1
In a large bowl, combine the raisins, sultanas, currants, and mixed peel.
Step 2
Add the suet and brown sugar to the bowl and mix well.
Step 3
Stir in the chopped apples, lemon zest and juice, and orange zest and juice.
Step 4
Add the mixed spice, cinnamon, and nutmeg, and mix thoroughly.
Step 5
Pour in the brandy and mix everything together until well combined.
Step 6
Cover the bowl with a clean cloth and leave to stand in a cool place for at least 12 hours or overnight.
Step 7
After resting, transfer the mincemeat into sterilized jars and seal tightly.
