Tostones are twice-fried plantain slices that are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. They make a delicious snack or side dish.
Directions
Step 1
Peel the green plantains and cut them into 1-inch thick slices.
Step 2
Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
Step 3
Add the plantain slices to the hot oil and fry for about 3 minutes on each side, or until they are golden yellow. Remove and drain on paper towels.
Step 4
Using the bottom of a glass or a tostonera, flatten each plantain slice to about half its original thickness.
Step 5
Dip the flattened plantains in water mixed with salt, then return them to the hot oil.
Step 6
Fry the plantains again for about 2 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and crispy. Remove and drain on paper towels.
Step 7
Sprinkle with additional salt to taste, if desired. Serve hot.
