Moon cakes are traditional Chinese pastries typically eaten during the Mid-Autumn Festival. These cakes are known for their rich, dense filling encased in a tender pastry. This recipe will guide you through making delicious moon cakes at home.

Ingredients

  • 300 g all-purpose flour
  • 1 egg
  • 200 g golden syrup
  • 600 g lotus seed paste
  • 1 tsp lye water
  • 60 g peanut oil
  • 12 salted egg yolks
  • 1 tbsp water

Directions

Step 1
In a bowl, mix together the golden syrup, peanut oil, and lye water until well combined.

Gradually add the flour into the mixture, stirring continuously until a dough forms.

Cover the dough with plastic wrap and let it rest for at least 2 hours.

Divide the lotus seed paste into 12 equal portions and wrap each portion around a salted egg yolk.

Divide the dough into 12 equal portions and roll each portion into a ball.
Step 6
Flatten each dough ball and place a lotus seed paste ball in the center. Wrap the dough around the filling completely.

Place the filled dough balls into moon cake molds and press to shape.

Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).

Place the moon cakes on a baking tray lined with parchment paper and bake for 10 minutes.

Remove the moon cakes from the oven and let them cool for 10 minutes.

Mix the egg and water to make an egg wash. Brush the moon cakes with the egg wash.

Return the moon cakes to the oven and bake for another 15 minutes or until golden brown.
