Bialys are a delightful bread roll originating from Poland. They are similar to bagels but without the hole, and feature a delicious onion and poppy seed filling in the center. This recipe will guide you through making these savory treats from scratch.
Directions
Step 1
In a large bowl, combine the bread flour, dry yeast, sugar, and salt.
Step 2
Gradually add the water and mix until you have a smooth dough.
Step 3
Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until it becomes elastic.
Step 4
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
Step 5
Meanwhile, heat the vegetable oil in a pan and sauté the chopped onion until golden brown. Add the poppy seeds and cook for another 2 minutes. Set aside to cool.
Step 6
Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 10 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball.
Step 7
Place the dough balls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
Step 8
Preheat the oven to 220°C (430°F).
Step 9
Using your thumb, make a deep indentation in the center of each dough ball and fill it with the onion-poppy seed mixture.
Step 10
Bake the bialys for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
