Enjoy a traditional Greek dish with this easy-to-follow gyros recipe. Perfectly seasoned meat is cooked and wrapped in pita bread with fresh toppings and a creamy tzatziki sauce.

Ingredients

  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 4 cloves garlic
  • 500 g ground beef
  • 500 g ground lamb
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 onion
  • 1 tbsp oregano
  • 1 tsp pepper
  • 8 pita bread
  • 1 red onion
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 2 tomato
  • 1 cup tzatziki sauce

Directions

Step 1
In a large bowl, combine ground lamb, ground beef, minced garlic, finely chopped onion, dried oregano, ground cumin, salt, and black pepper.
Step 2
Mix everything thoroughly until all ingredients are well combined.
Step 3
Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour to allow the flavors to blend.

Preheat your grill or skillet to medium-high heat and add olive oil.
Step 5
Shape the meat mixture into small, flat patties or logs.
Step 6
Cook the patties or logs on the grill or skillet for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until fully cooked.
Step 7
Warm the pita breads slightly on the grill or in a skillet.
Step 8
Assemble the gyros by placing the cooked meat onto the warm pita bread, and topping with sliced tomatoes, thinly sliced red onion, and a generous dollop of tzatziki sauce.
Step 9
Fold the pita bread around the fillings and serve immediately.
