Enjoy a taste of Puerto Rico with these deliciously crispy tostones, made from twice-fried green plantains. Perfect as a snack or side dish, they are easy to make and incredibly satisfying.
Directions
Step 1
Peel the green plantains and cut them into 2-inch thick slices.
Step 2
Heat the vegetable oil in a deep pan over medium heat.
Step 3
Fry the plantain slices for 3-4 minutes or until they are golden but not fully cooked.
Step 4
Remove the plantains from the oil and place them on a paper towel to drain excess oil.
Step 5
Using a tostonera or the bottom of a flat cup, flatten each plantain slice to about half its original thickness.
Step 6
In a bowl, mix the water and salt until the salt is fully dissolved.
Step 7
Dip each flattened plantain slice into the salted water briefly and then pat dry with a paper towel.
Step 8
Return the plantain slices to the hot oil and fry for another 2-3 minutes until they are crispy and golden.
Step 9
Remove the tostones from the oil and place them on a paper towel to drain. Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.
