Chinese BBQ Pork (Char Siu)

Char Siu is a popular Cantonese BBQ pork dish, marinated in a savory and sweet sauce, then roasted to perfection. It's often enjoyed with rice or as a filling in buns.

Ingredients

  • 30 g brown sugar
  • 5 g Chinese five-spice powder
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 60 ml hoisin sauce
  • 60 ml honey
  • 900 g pork shoulder
  • 1 ml red food coloring
  • 60 ml soy sauce

Directions

Step 1
Cut the pork shoulder into long strips about 2 inches thick.
Step 2
In a mixing bowl, combine hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, brown sugar, Chinese five-spice powder, minced garlic, and red food coloring.

Add the pork strips to the marinade, ensuring they are well coated. Marinate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight.

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Place the marinated pork on a wire rack set over a baking tray lined with foil.
Step 6
Roast the pork for 30 minutes, basting with the leftover marinade halfway through.
Step 7
Increase the oven temperature to 425°F (220°C) and roast for an additional 10-15 minutes, until the pork is charred and cooked through.
Step 8
Remove from the oven and let the pork rest for 10 minutes before slicing.
