Stroopwafels are a traditional Dutch treat consisting of two thin waffle cookies filled with a caramel-like syrup. Perfect for a sweet snack or dessert, these homemade stroopwafels will impress any guest.
Directions
Step 1
In a large bowl, combine flour, melted butter, granulated sugar, yeast, warm milk, and the egg. Mix well to form a dough.
Step 2
Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
Step 3
Preheat a waffle iron for thin waffles.
Step 4
Divide the dough into small balls, about the size of a golf ball.
Step 5
Place a ball of dough in the waffle iron and cook until golden brown and crisp.
Step 6
Carefully slice the waffle horizontally into two thin wafers while still hot.
Step 7
In a saucepan, combine brown sugar, ground cinnamon, melted butter (for filling), and dark corn syrup. Cook over medium heat until the mixture is smooth and slightly thickened.
Step 8
Spread a thin layer of the syrup mixture on one half of the sliced waffle. Top with the other half to form a sandwich.
Step 9
Repeat with the remaining dough and syrup.
Step 10
Allow the stroopwafels to cool and set before serving.
