Ingredients

  • 10 g baking powder
  • 180 g cornmeal
  • 1 egg
  • 120 g flour
  • 240 ml milk
  • 100 g onion
  • 5 g salt
  • 50 g sugar
  • 500 ml vegetable oil

Directions

Step 1
In a large bowl, mix together the cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
Step 2
Add the chopped onion to the dry ingredients and mix well.
Step 3
In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk and egg until well combined.
Step 4
Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Do not overmix.
Step 5
Heat the vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 180°C (350°F).
Step 6
Drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil and fry until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per batch.
Step 7
Remove the hush puppies from the oil and drain on paper towels. Serve hot.
