Ingredients

12 Servings
  • 9 g active dry yeast
  • 480 g all-purpose flour
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 2 eggs
  • 10 g salt
  • 50 g sugar
  • 60 ml vegetable oil
  • 240 ml warm water
  • 15 ml water

Directions

Step 1
In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 10 minutes until frothy.
Step 2
Add the flour, salt, oil, and eggs to the yeast mixture. Mix until the dough comes together.
Step 3
Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Step 4
Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours until doubled in size.
Step 5
Punch down the dough and divide it into three equal parts. Roll each part into a long rope.
Step 6
Braid the ropes together to form a loaf and place it on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
Step 7
Cover the loaf with a damp cloth and let it rise again for about 30-45 minutes.
Step 8
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
Step 9
In a small bowl, mix the egg yolk and 1 tbsp water to make an egg wash. Brush the egg wash over the loaf.
Step 10
Bake for 30-35 minutes or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
Step 11
Let the Challah cool on a wire rack before slicing and serving.
