Delicious spiced buns adorned with a cross, traditionally enjoyed during Easter. These buns are soft, slightly sweet, and filled with fragrant spices and dried fruits.
Directions
Step 1
Warm the milk until lukewarm (about 43°C).
Step 2
In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm milk along with 1 tablespoon of the sugar. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes, until frothy.
Step 3
In a large bowl, combine the flour, remaining sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
Step 4
Add the melted butter, eggs, and yeast mixture to the dry ingredients. Stir until a dough forms.
Step 5
Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
Step 6
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
Step 7
Punch down the dough and knead in the currants, raisins, and orange zest.
Step 8
Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces and shape into buns. Place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Step 9
Cover and let the buns rise for another 30-45 minutes, until doubled in size.
Step 10
Preheat the oven to 190°C (375°F).
Step 11
For the cross, mix the flour and water to form a paste. Transfer the paste to a piping bag and pipe a cross on each bun.
Step 12
Bake the buns for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
Step 13
While the buns are baking, heat the apricot jam until melted. Brush the hot buns with the melted jam to glaze.
Step 14
Allow the buns to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy!
