Step 1
In a large bowl, combine the precooked cornmeal and salt.

Slowly add the water, mixing continuously until a dough forms.

Let the dough rest for about 5 minutes.

Divide the dough into equal portions and shape each portion into a ball, then flatten into discs about 1 cm thick.

Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat.

Cook the arepas in the skillet for about 5-7 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and crispy on the outside.

Remove from heat and spread a little butter on each arepa before serving.
