Delicious and creamy Portuguese custard tarts, also known as Pasteis de Nata, with a crispy and flaky pastry shell filled with a rich custard filling.
Directions
Step 1
Preheat the oven to 250°C (482°F).
Step 2
Roll out the puff pastry and cut into 12 equal pieces. Press each piece into a muffin tin to form the tart shells.
Step 3
In a saucepan, combine milk, lemon peel, and cinnamon stick. Bring to a boil, then remove from heat and let it steep for 10 minutes. Remove the lemon peel and cinnamon stick.
Step 4
In another pot, mix flour, sugar, and the water. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly until it thickens. Gradually whisk in the milk mixture.
Step 5
Beat the egg yolks and slowly add them to the milk mixture, stirring constantly until well combined.
Step 6
Pour the custard into the prepared tart shells.
Step 7
Bake in the preheated oven for about 15 minutes or until the tops are browned and the custard is set.
Step 8
Allow to cool in the tins for a few minutes before transferring to a rack to cool completely.
